‘Mass customization’ is the core concept of computational design, which distinctively differs from the notion of industrial revolution marked as ‘Mass production’. Computational design and fabricating tools are inseparable in the design process. Laser cutter, 3dprinter and robotic fabrication have opened up the field of experiment in architecture education and practice. Therefore, complex form and mass customization are a common phenomenon nowadays. Design thinking through parametric and algorithmic approach added a new dimension to studio culture all over the world.

Department of architecture, AIUB offers a course ‘Architectural Graphics III’ that focuses on the parametric software Rhino and Grasshopper. These are the key tools for computational design. After a successful completion of an installation project “TOUCH THE VIRTUAL”, architecture department is planning to organize a 3-day workshop on Digital Design and Fabrication. ‘Touch The Virtual’ was an experiment from Studio V, spring 2014-15. The project was well documented both in photograph and video format and published on a renowned architecture website Arch20 . It got a huge coverage and brought an international exposure to our students of AIUB.

Workshop at AIUB _ Tools Matter _ 2015

.

[01] OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE

The workshop entitled, ‘’TOOLS MATTER: Computational design and fabrication ’’, will be emphasized on

  1. Reshaping the thought process: How to set logics in computational design and explore different and alternative options in design process.
  2. Fabrication: How to get the virtual model in the physical form preciously.

Participants of the workshop will gain knowledge of Rhino program and explore complex geometry in NURBS modeling. Computational design will be explored in Grasshopper, and finally an installation will be made by all in groups. The target groups of the workshop are students and professional, at the beginner level, as this type of event is still unexplored in our education. Therefore, this workshop will be a great opportunity for architecture students and professional as well.
