Kai Tak 2.0: Winning Project by Masudul Islam and his Team
6 February, 2015The competition was aimed to transform the former airport runway tip and Kwun Tong waterfront into a recreational landmark- a tourism and entertainment destination for all public enjoyment. Among 80 entries received from around the world, Islam’s proposal Kai Tak 2.0: Healthy Lift Off wins the award.
The winning scheme proposes a new healthy development strategy that benefits Hong Kong, creates balanced socio-economic systems, and improves the natural ecologies of landscape, water, and habitats. The scheme promotes a new urban model that incorporates the global within the local, nature within the urban, and the social within the economy.

The scheme has translated the Healthy City concept in full by creating venues, like new channel, curvilinear shoreline seamlessly integrated into the land for uses for health, culture, education and commercial.
Green-Blue infrastructure systems both on land and water underpin the proposed Masterplan. A landscape loop frames the waterfront accessible with floating islands, wetlands, boardwalks and parks. The scheme proposes the natural treatment of the water edge by tidal flushing action for making the apparently otherwise largely dead water body alive and fresh.
“The Entry is successful in creating a unique place with a big idea. Among all entries, it fares the best in branding Kai Tak Fantasy, creating an identity in place making and synergising with the neighbourhood” – Jury mentioned.
The team envisages the Kai Tak Healthy City will complement other large waterfront development initiatives to enhance Hong Kong harbourfront reputation as a world-class destination.
The winning proposal will be referred for future implementation by the government of HKSAR. For more information visit http://kaitakfantasy.hk/opening.php
