Helix Tower: Connecting Sport, Work, and Public Life
Dhaka is one of the fastest-growing and most densely populated cities in the world, where the pressure on land has reached a critical point. Rapid urbanization, increasing population density, and continuous inward migration have made horizontal expansion unsustainable. As available land diminishes, the city must shift toward vertical development to accommodate growth while preserving essential open spaces. This project responds to that challenge by reimagining the relationship between sports, work and public spaces.

The proposed project is a multi-level sports complex that promotes inclusivity by providing accessible, year-round recreational facilities and allows the wider public to engage in organized physical activity beyond traditional field-based sports. The podium accommodates indoor courts, fitness and training facilities, swimming and wellness spaces, and semi-outdoor recreational terraces. Along with sports, there are exhibition spaces, shops, and supermarkets, which allow strong public interaction. A portion of the site is left for outdoor fields, including a field where players and children can come and enjoy various sports.

Typical office buildings often lack breakout spaces with limited spaces for social interaction or outdoor green areas. Several studies suggest that the presence of green spaces alone improves productivity and mental health. Therefore, this project attempts to incorporate breakout zones as much as possible in the tower. The 60-storey building is shaped by a spiraling system of terraces and double-height spaces, drawing greenery upward from the site and weaving it through the tower. These semi-outdoor breakout spaces blur the boundary between inside and outside, creating pockets for pause, interaction, and relief within the vertical workplace. The result is a high-rise that is not only efficient in form but experiential in nature—an architecture that transforms height into an opportunity for connection rather than isolation.
